Candelight night

Candlelight Night has been part of the fabric of Muscota since the school’s inception. Its place as a cherished tradition began when the community came together on blankets in the gymnasium to eat a potluck dinner, perform on an open mic, and celebrate the Winter Solstice. The potluck has since moved to a separate night.

As it evolves, Candlelight Night continues to honor this communal spirit and Muscota’s commitment to multiculturalism, interdisciplinary learning, and remembrance that the light that knowledge brings to the world should be shared and shined onto others.

The evening begins in the auditorium of I.S. 52 (650 Academy Street) with musical performances from our K-5 students, staff, and families including the Parent-Teacher Choir (see below.)

Doors open at 5:45 pm.
The show begins at 6:00 pm.
The show ends at 7:15 pm with a rousing rendition of This Little Light of Mine sung by the entire community.

NOTE: The auditorium at I.S. 52 tends to be warm.

Parent-teacher choir

Another honored tradition at Muscota is The Parent-Teacher Choir.

The Parent-Teacher Choir enables the entire community to participate in Candlelight Night’s joyous celebration of the winter season.

This year, we continue the tradition of a parent-led choir with Yvonne and Sam Bill at the helm. Thank you, Sam and Yvonne. The choir will be performing selections from “Frostiana” by Randall Thompson.

All are welcome to join the choir. No experience is necessary. Rehearsals will take place throughout November and December leading up to Candlelight Night. Most rehearsals will be staggered between early morning and evening rehearsals.
